Coronado has a rich military history and hosts many patriotic events during the year to honor those who have served. An annual Memorial Day tradition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422 is a tribute in Star Park to celebrate the men and women who fell to keep this country safe. Star Park is located at 1030 Park Place. This little park is a block from the Hotel Del Coronado, between Orange Avenue and the Beach. The park was originally designed in 1886. The park is round, but the plants were originally landscaped into the shape of a star and the five streets that shoot out from the middle circle resemble a star shape. The park has two military cannons that were a gift from General Joseph Pendleton, USMC. There is also a memorial rock that was taken from the Ocean Boulevard seawall that commemorates Coronado’s veterans. The flag pole was dedicated by the Rotary Club of Coronado in 2003 and stands in memory of all who have served our country. The ceremony starts at 10 am.
